Animated Short Films in Theaters?

This is just a thought that I had for a long time and I thought that it would be cool to share it with you guys. Sometimes when I go to watch a Disney movie there will be the occasional short film before the actual features play. Short films like For the Birds or Geri's Game and the latest film, Bao which played before Incredibles 2. Personally, I love these short films, their short and entertaining and I wish that there was more to watch. My question is, do you guys think that there is a market for these in the big screen? I'm not talking about playing right before a movie, but rather people pay just to watch these animated short films, or even just regular short films for that matter. Especially in this day in age when many people have short attention spans, I feel like watching shorter stories is a cool concept. I'm not sure what I'm thinking, but it's a thought. What are your thoughts? Is there are market for something like this? I know they do these in art cinemas like Cornell Cinema, but is there a place for these in bigger theaters?

  1. I honestly don't know how these short films would fare on their own in theaters. Seeing as these shorts are about 5-10 minutes, attracting a sizable enough audience to turn around a profit might prove difficult. It is clear that a lot of time and effort goes into making these shorts, but it is all basically for the entertainment and critical value rather than the cash grab. While it would be a nice change to see shorts individually displayed in theaters, I don't think the business aspect of it would hold up.

  2. I agree, especially now days where every single month of the year is now a big market for any big movie. In the past years no big movies would drop in the latter months of the years like from September till December. These were consider dead moths at least for big box office films. Now a day you have movies like Venom being crowned the king of October box office with 80 mill and Star Wars owning December's box office till the end of times with a 200 mill plus. With movies like these domination theater chains all throughout the year, there is very little room for shorts to be shown. Theater chains will have very little interest to set aside a screen for shorts when you have a big block buster movie coming out every other month.
