LEGOS
Using Legos as a medium to create animation hits home for me. When I was 12 my brother and I tried to make a movie using our lego collection after watching this video on Youtube, but we gave up after a few frames realizing it would take more than a couple minutes to create. Somewhere on my desktop at home I still have the few pictures I took of the legos.
Manipulating legos to create a stop motion animated film is called Brickfilm. The earliest known Brickfilm is called En rejse til månen and was made in 1973. Give it a watch if you have the time. I think it's actually pretty cool. Since En reise til manen Brickfilm took off and more people were using legos, a very accessible medium, to tell stories. By the 90s the Lego company started encouraging the use of legos to make movies (since they were profiting off of it). They released how-to books to further profit off the Brickfilm craze. In present day Brickfilm has gained some sophistication. Although films like the Lego Movie don't use actual lego stop motion and rather computer generated animation, it still mimics the style and look of classic Brickfilm. Now there are film festivals that are specifically for Brickfilm and in the animation world it is a respected medium.
