Jurassic Park: Before and After

I found this video showing shots from Jurassic Park before and after they were animated. This was the first film to use modern modes of CGI and the effects have stood the test of time; while subsequent films fail to convince audiences. Why? The video shows how the filmmakers cleverly blended live action with the models and backgrounds to truly bring the dinosaurs to life. The animation is so realistic and impressive that the film has shaped the way people view dinosaurs.. Despite modern revelations in science proving otherwise.

Why do you think the effects in this film stand above future attempts at CGI? And do you think this film would still be revered if it was made with puppets?

  1. I'm sure the film would have turned out just as well since a large number of the dinosaur effects shown in the film were animatronics or people in suits. Most of the close-ups of the dinosaurs were accomplished like this. If they did not have access to the technology that all for computer generated effects, I think they could have made the film just as effectively if they replaced the majority of the wide shots in the film with close-ups and use puppets.
