Animation in different forms

I have to be honest. I was nervous about taking a class wit the word "Animation" in the title. I assumed we were going to be on the computers, making a ball bounce around the screen. As exciting as that sounds, I am perfectly content with sitting in the auditorium, being taught about animation (rather than doing it). I must admit I was apart of animation's identity crisis, because all I thought about were cartoons. I knew that not all animation was for children or intended to be for children, but I never really enjoyed Family Guy either. What I did not know, was that the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park could be considered animation. I really only considered it CGI. I know, pretty dumb of me... but when i though of animation I though of cartoon network and Disney. Yep, I'm one of those people. I think it's really cool that animation can bring itself into multiple forms that have different purposes. Many kid shows, such as Paw Patrol, are works of animation that help teach children the basics of life, such as being kind to one another. There's also animation for children that are intended to entertain, like Tom and Jerry. Overall, I've already learned not to assume that animation is just for one purpose.

  1. I totally agree! This class has really opened up what my definition of animation is. I only thought of it as Spongebob and The Simpsons. But after todays class I realized that any sort of illusion of movement can count as animation. Our readings have continue to point out that what we usually associate animation with cartoons and Disney. We have been so cut off from other such interesting and avant-garde forms of animation, like the Starry Night video and Waking Life. Those are both so unique and I would have never even realized. Waking Life is also really cool because it touches upon really specific philosophical topics that most "cartoons" would not even think about tackling.

  3. Honestly tho like being able to see animation through a different eyes is really refreshing. CGI is so widely used in todays cinema, even in films where we wouldn't really expect them to be in, like in David Fincher's Gone Girl, CGI is actually used to enhance the city like adding trees and what not. All of this is just animation.
