Animation has a mysterious stigma for adults... When asked, many adults show a lack of interest in animation claiming that it can only be for children or if it is for adults they're made uncomfortable by the medium. One adult animation that I think is very unique in it's target audience is Bojack Horseman. This show is an intense drama with witty, clever humor sprinkled in. I realized recently that the show would not be nearly as good if it was NOT an animation. The show takes advantage of being an animation at many points. The characters in the show are half humans half walking, talking animals. That is just one aspect of an entire world with different rules and guidelines which creates lots of opportunities for jokes. It also has lots of drug induced dreams or trippy flashbacks in which they totally change up their animation style and mess with reality. All this and more make the show what it is.
Bratz: Rock Angelz is the movie I didn't know I needed
This weekend, I watched the hit 2005 animated movie Bratz: Rock Angelz. This movie was one of the first Bratz films in CGI, and let me tell you- the plot is ALL OVER THE PLACE. The girls start a fashion magazine and use stolen passes to get into hot London punk clubs, but when they lose their passes they decide that the only way to get into the gig is to become a rock band? This movie can be considered capitalist propaganda- the Bratz shop in order to destress about their problems, and it's an implemental part of their lives. They don't have jobs either- Jade has an internship, but only for three hours until she is fired. Chloe meets a TRASH British prince and ignores her best friend Yasmin who finds celebrity judge Byron Powell's (I don't make this stuff up) dog, Ozzy. Jade and Sasha try to do a photo shoot for the magazine, but Sasha micromanages the whole thing and makes her friend feel bad! And this whole time, there's these two evil blond twins (Kaley Cuoco PLA...
I think that's a really interesting point that Bojack would not be good if it wasn't animation. I think the animation of the show (and the animal puns) provide the comic relief the show needs. If it wasn't animation I think it would almost be too sad a show to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a show like Bojack Horseman would not work or wouldn't be nearly as good if it wasn't animated. The fact that it is animated not only gives it more creative freedom with its characters and visuals in general, but as Em pointed out it gives it more freedom with the content of its stories. The fact that the show can create an entirely unique world with "different rules and guidelines" allows it to be able to tackle more intense subjects without being too upsetting. In some respects I think the lack of realism from the animation is what allows the show to feel more human.
