Animation 4 Everyone

After watching Don Hertzfeldt on one of the first day of classes, the whole question of is animation just for kids has been annoying me. Yes, there is animation that is geared for kids. Yes, there is animation that an older audience would find adolescent. But there is a lot of animation that is enjoyable for any age to watch. For example, when I was much younger, my brother and I found Don Hertzfeldt's short animated film Rejected (2000) and as a 10 year old, it was absolutely hilarious. I revisited the short the other day and got the same amount of joy and laughter as I did 9 years ago.

I'm still finding myself gravitating towards more animation as I grow up. With shows like Bojack Horseman and South Park,  I find joy in the different animated styles and how animation can break almost all physical laws. There are little to no boundaries letting the animators show off their creativity and doing basically anything they please. The fact that there are people think that animation is just for kids makes me think they haven't watched an animated film since they were a kid. Even in movies geared towards younger audiences, there are still aspects that an older audience would enjoy.

Animation is for everyone and I will be watching Spongebob until the day that I die.

  1. I agree with the idea that animation is easily appreciated for everyone and I think we have seen the proof from watching the films in class. We watched films that would appeal to younger kids mainly but also adults and we have also watched films like Waking Life which was about surreal existence appealed to adults because of its underlying message. I think overall I agree with you that people should never underestimate cartoons.
