G1 Optimus Prime (1984) / Bumblebee Optimus Prime (2018) |
So the new
Transformers movie,
Bumblebee, is coming out in a few weeks at the time of this writing. Directed by Travis Knight
(Kubo and the Two Strings), I initially was not very excited for the movie until some more trailers were released recently, teasing the other
Transformers characters that would be in the movie. What struck me the most was that all the characters look incredibly different from the way they did in the last 5 movies, their designs updated to resemble the original toys and cartoons they were based on. My question is, despite the transformers still being done in the same medium of hyper-hybrid animation, why go back and make them resemble and their cartoon counterparts? I personally am a big fan of the change, all the characters I've seen look great.

Bumblebee Shockwave (2018) / G1 Shockwave (1984) |
I am SO excited for Bumblebee. It's just a breath of fresh air to see a Transformers film made by someone who actually seems to hold a genuine love for the franchise as a whole. Seeing all the G1 designs come back is just a cherry on top. To be honest, I didn't hate the first Bayformers film, but what struck me about Bay's films is how busy everything looked. It's like he was trying his absolute damnedest to just inundate us with STUFF, which just made the film look like a demented garbage dump. With Bumblebee, the impression that I'm getting is that for the first time since, well ever, we're getting a Transformers narrative that tries to be more simple. In this case, simple is not at all a bad thing. A more calm, Ted Hughes-like story is honestly perfect for rebooting this franchise. And I'm counting down the days until I can see it for myself.
ReplyDeleteThese look amazing! Can't wait to see it!
