Grinch Movies
As I'm writing my movie review on the newest Grinch movie, "The Grinch", I became curious as to which Grinch movie people prefer. As far as I know there are now 3 movies about how the Grinch stole Christmas:
1) How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060345/
2) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0170016/?ref_=tt_ch
3) The Grinch (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2709692/
The 2000 version is by far my favorite. I think the live action depiction of Whoville and the Grinch's lair is way more compelling than the animation in the other versions. Also the 2000 version is crazy funny- the sexual tension between Martha May Whovier and the Grinch gets me every time. Honestly, I thought everyone prefers the live action grinch movie over the cartoons, but while talking to my friends about this most of them said they preferred the original grinch because of the nostalgia connected to it.
So which version do you prefer? I'm super curious if anyone will side with me.

I LOVE the live action version. it's honestly my favorite Christmas movie. I think that the adult jokes in it are really well placed and I also think that the filmmakers do an excellent job of illustrating Dr. Suess' crazy animated work in a live action world. I think that the visuals in the film do a great job of telling the story, and I think Jim Carrey's acting really adds to the animated way the Grinch acts and moves.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid who watched all the holiday specials every year, I have a soft spot for the original animated version. Its a short story that I think benefits from the faster storytelling. Yes the Carrey version fleshes out the character, and Whoville more, but I'm not sure that works to the story's benefit. The audience can pick up that the Grinch isn't the best guy in about 2 minutes, and I think the emotional payoff of his heart growing still works with the shorter build up. Also the soundtrack is undeniably better. It slaps, you can't debate me on this.
ReplyDeleteIt slaps and Seuss wrote the lyrics himself so you know it's for real!
DeleteI used to watch the live action one ALL THE TIME. Year round, even if it wasn't Christmas time. But then I watched the new one that jus came out, and was surprised that I couldn't even look at the live action Grinch. I felt... scared?? It was so weird
ReplyDeleteIt's weird for me how much I am nostalgic and have an emotional connection with Christmas considering I am Jewish, but I really love the time of year and the imagery (including films) that goes along with it. The 2000's grinch is something that really reminds me of childhood. Similarly, I have an intimate connection with Christmas episodes of animated shows, along with Christmas movies. This time of year is always fun for me even though I don't "celebrate" the holiday.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I haven't seen the most recent Grinch, but I plan on seeing it this weekend and I'm very excited. I haven't read the pervious comments so that I'm not spoiled by things before watching! I'm really excited that Tyler the Creator has songs in this movie because I feel like it gives it this new type of "hip" twist to it! I have high hopes so I'm hoping it fulfills my expectations!!
