Class Discussion on Thursday
When we were talking in our groups on Thursday, we were talking about how real CGI can get. I brought up a point which I thought to be interesting. When we were talking about Thanos from The Avengers, I mentioned that maybe he wasn't real enough looking because the creators didn't want to freak audiences out. I know this seems outlandish, but Professor Harrington brought up the point where something like The Blair Witch Project was convincing enough where people thought it was real. I thought this was an interesting discussion as CGI continues to get more realistic, when will people know if it is real or not.
I don't think the VFX team at Marvel has ever tried to hold back, and I know they consider Thanos to be their greatest achievement in mocap, if not THE greatest achievement in mocap history. However, I think the point when audiences do get freaked out by how real a CG will look is in the near future, but I don't think it will be because of a purple alien, because we don't run into those too often on earth. I think once we really nail (and I mean spot on perfect) a perfectly animated HUMAN, then that'll be the day that audiences shit themselves in their reclining theater seats.
