2D vs 3D

During the Pixar film that we watched in class, they said that 2D animation died because of Pixar's films. That 2D was not something the public wanted to see anymore. Is that true?
I think that it is evident that 2D animation did die once Pixar began releasing their films. However, I don't think it had to. I don't think that people didn't want to see 2D animated films, people just assumed they didn't want to see 2D animated films...if that makes sense.  3D animation became the norm and it was new and exciting, to the point where 2D just got pushed to the side. I think that if a 2D animated film was to be released today (if the story was solid), it would be very successful. It would also be unique because 2D is rarely used anymore for animation.
