Was Stranger Things inspired by Akira?

While watching Akira on Tuesday, I got some strong Stranger Things vibes. This came from the synth music, and the plot especially. In Stranger Things we see the main character, Eleven, as a character with extremely powerful telekinetic powers just like the kids in Akira. I think that Akira fueled this horror/sci-fi genre that we still see today in live-action television and movies.

  1. I didn't even think of this connection but it's definitely plausible! I think a lot of Stranger Things comes from just 80s sci fi in general but with the added connection of telepathic children there is another level of similarity.

  2. When I was watching Akira, this didn't pop out to me. However, you mentioning it now I can kind of see it! I don't think it's a stretch to connect stranger things to akira, specifically because of the powers shared between both the film and the tv show.
