Superhero Theory
It was really refreshing to read that article, 21 century superheroes. As a film major, I feel so unappreciated by a lot of people back home or from other majors. It always surprises me when I try to talk theory with someone and they are less than enthusiastic. In fact, sometimes people are just straight up rude.
I was having a conversation with a close friend once when I told him that I think the reason that so many superhero movies have been coming out is because America is looking for a hero, and wants to be distracted by all the shit going on politically. He told me I was looking too deep into it, that movies are just a form of entertainment, nothing more. He rejected my ideas that society and current events played deeply into the media. I was very upset.
If you don't have theory surrounding something, it must not be considered art. Being able to read someone else talking about the same things I felt myself justifying was brilliant. I really appreciated that article.
I totally agree with you. Yeah, there’s a lot of action and other aspects that seem to draw into just pure entertainment, but under all of it, there’s a reason why so many people enjoy watching these heroes. The events that unfold on this Earth have a direct influence on what people create. And the need for a hero is something that may never go away. Conflict seems to be nonstop, and it’s nice to get carried away thinking that an individual, or group of individuals, can heal or at least temporarily stop these problems.
ReplyDeleteI CAN RELATE TO YOU SO HARD! It makes me so mad that people do this kind of stuff me. I think this reading really says something about how important movies and television shows are. I think that it important to study film, it's as important as going into medical school or any other "respectable" major. Thank you for saying this. It was bugging me for a long time also.
