Animation in Docs

We've watched a few animated docs in this class. Recently I think I've noticed an uptick in how often animation is used in documentary filmmaking. If not in the entire doc it is at least used as a tool for flashbacks or statistics. I think this adheres to the idea that we discussed earlier in the semester. That animation has absolutely exploded in terms of its style and uses. Animation can also be extremely effective in illustrating (literally) states of consciousness that may be more challenging to show with live-action film. Drug trips, dreams, and fantasies all are great uses for animation. For example this documentary about a major baseball player tripping on LSD.

  1. I agree with this! I have considered using animation in my own student films to the same effect. There are many uses of animation in illustrating more complex ideas.
