Akira and Blade Runner

I am not sure if I am alone in seeing very clear Blade Runner inspiration in Akira. Apsects of the score show a very clear influence, but also the brutalist architecture of the buildings in Akira. I think it is very interesting that one of the most successful and pervasive Japanese animated films is inspired by an American live action film that drew inspiration from Japanese culture!

  1. It's funny how Western and Eastern culture does that. Like if you go back to the 50's there's all the crossover between Samurai and westerns. But yeah, Blade Runner was kinda like a peddle in a lake. Everything sci-fi for the next 30 years all had a bit of BR in it. Then you can just make a timeline from that to Akira to Ghost in the Shell to The Matrix. It's like a zig-zag from anime to Western live-action. Interesting how the trend's gone over the years.
