Combined Effects in Stranger Things

So I wanted to share this article I found about the animation used in 'Stranger Things' because it's one of my favorite shows and I'm sure many of you like it as well. Animation is something I know basically nothing about when it comes to the actual process. I may understand the basics but there's always been questions in the back of my mind of what steps are taken to truly reach the final product. I found this article fun to read because Aaron Sims and his visual effects studio, ASC, wanted to combine practical and visual effects to create the Demogorgon. I thought this was cool because practical effects aren't used very often when creating creatures and monsters and worlds like this. However, the Duffer Brothers just wanted to make sure that they're 80's sci-fi theme for the show wouldn't be disrupted with the effects. The design for the monster was first drawn and then Sims wanted to utilize 3D printing in the next stage of animating this creature. I just thought it was worth sharing that Aaron Sims used a combination of methods for animating in making the Demogorgon.

  1. I think it is interesting how a show that emulates an 80s adventure movie for kids uses modern modes of production to create their monster. I wonder how much the show would differ visually if they had used an articulated puppet instead of a completely computer generated character.

  2. 3D printing is a cool thing to think about. It's such a new technology right now... I wonder if it'll become bigger in the future when it comes to things like stop motion. It might help bring some of the more creative aspects of how motion works in animation - the way it can deny the laws of physics - if you can make different statues with different proportions to serve as your "frames" of stop animation, you could do a sort of squish and stretch... I wonder if that would be a worthwhile endeavor at all. Just something this article got me musing about.
